Domestic cricket
How was the structure of domestic
cricket till two years ago?
The lowest point in Sri Lankan domestic cricket is 'school
cricket'. School cricket is divided on many levels, such as under-13, 15, 17
and 19. At each level there are two teams of each school ('A' and 'B').
According to the performance of the players, they are selected in the 'A' and
'B' teams. 'A' team is considered better than Team 'B'. The coaches sent by the
board to the players of these teams are trained. School tournaments are
organized at the level of each age group. Each player is given grade according
to the performance.
The last team of any school is under-19 which is considered
to be the most important because after this the next stage starts professional
cricket.
Each state selects the state level team from its under-19
school tournament. This team takes part in state level tournaments across the
country. Based on the performance of the players in these tournaments at the
state level, they are selected for Sri Lanka Under-19 team. Players are also
selected for all the cricket clubs of the country from state level teams. Sri
Lankan first class cricket begins at the club level. Clubs in Sri Lanka are
divided into two levels ('A' and 'B') according to quality. Among these 'A'
tier clubs have been given the status of First Class Cricket. From these clubs,
players are selected for the national team of Sri Lanka.
